A discussion of why the Institute for Cyber Enabled Research (ICER) at Michigan State University transitioned the installed High Performance Computing Cluster of over 1,000 hardware nodes from CentOS 7.9 to Ubuntu 22.04 and the operating system upgrade process. Specific items covered include constraints, challenges, operating system evaluation, software deployment, and the process used to transition over 2500 active users to using the new operating system for research computing.
